Overview
Senior Database Engineer, Care Solutions
We are seeking a Senior Database Engineer to join the Care Solutions engineering team at HealthEdge in our Hyderabad office. In this role you will design, build and optimize high-performance data solutions that power our Care Solutions platforms helping deliver better patient outcomes at scale.
You will combine deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server with a modern data engineering mindset, building reliable data pipelines, driving cloud-native migrations on AWS and championing data quality across our platform. This role partners closely with application developers, architects, BI engineers and product management to turn complex healthcare data into actionable, performant solutions.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
SQL Server Development and Optimization
- Develop, maintain and optimize HEDIS measure logic, ensuring accuracy, performance and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Design and maintain SQL Server objects (tables, views, stored procedures, triggers, functions) in compliance with database design standards and normalization rules.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks through query optimization, indexing strategies, partitioning and execution plan analysis.
- Conduct root-cause analysis for failures and slow queries, recommending and implementing targeted improvements.
- Evaluate new SQL Server features (2017+) and cloud database services, recommending adoption where they improve reliability and performance.
- Use AI coding assistants to accelerate T-SQL development, generate test cases, identify query optimization opportunities and automate routine database tasks.
Data Architecture and Pipeline Engineering
- Design and build scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows using AWS Glue, dbt, Airflow and Step Functions to move data reliably across systems.
- Architect data models for both transactional and analytical workloads, applying dimensional modeling, lakehouse patterns and schema evolution best practices.
- Create and maintain schemas, ER diagrams and data documentation that serve as the single source of truth for engineering and analytics teams.
Cloud Data Services and Migration
- Build and operate data solutions on AWS data services including S3, Glue, EMR, Redshift, Athena, Lake Formation and Step Functions.
- Drive data migration, transformation and modernization efforts as we move workloads from on-premises SQL Server to AWS-native architectures.
- Implement CI/CD for data pipelines and database deployments, integrating with Git and DevOps automation tooling.
Collaboration and Quality
- Partner with application developers and architects to design efficient, database-driven solutions that meet performance SLAs.
- Participate in code reviews and enforce database coding standards, contributing to a culture of engineering excellence.
- Perform unit testing for stored procedures and data logic; validate performance improvements and ensure regression-free releases.
- Support QA teams with test data, scripts and environment setup.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Leverage AI-driven development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) as a power user across code generation, test scaffolding, query optimization and data quality, raising velocity for yourself and the team.
- Stay current with SQL Server, cloud databases, data engineering and data platform trends; bring actionable recommendations to the team.
- Suggest and pilot new tools, frameworks and practices that improve data reliability, observability and team velocity.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, IT or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5–8 years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2017 or later), including advanced T-SQL and database programming.
- Strong foundation in normalization, indexing strategies, transactions, isolation levels and query execution plans.
- Experience building and operating data pipelines using ETL/ELT frameworks and orchestration tools (Airflow, AWS Glue, dbt).
- Working knowledge of AWS data services: S3, Glue, EMR, Redshift, Athena, Lake Formation, Step Functions.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose language: C# .NET or Python.
- Knowledge of data warehousing, dimensional modeling and lakehouse architectures.
- Strong experience writing and optimizing complex SQL queries at scale.
- Familiarity with Git/Bitbucket, DevOps concepts and SQL deployment automation.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience using AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) as active development partners for code generation, test scaffolding, code review and documentation
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience with MongoDB, DynamoDB or other NoSQL databases.
- Knowledge of Redgate SQL Toolbelt (SQL Prompt, SQL Compare).
- Experience with SSIS or other legacy ETL/data migration tools.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and cloud-based database services (Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
- Experience in healthcare technology, digital health platforms or familiarity with HIPAA compliance and healthcare data security standards.
- Understanding of OOP concepts and experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
- Cloud platform certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, AWS Data Analytics or similar).
BEHAVIORS AND TRAITS
- Curious, continuously learning and open to feedback – you invest in sharpening your craft.
- Comfortable with ambiguity; you thrive when solving problems that don’t have a playbook.
- Collaborative across teams, functions and geographies – you build trust with US and India-based colleagues.
- Passionate about leveraging technology to improve patient care and health outcomes.
- Takes ownership: you follow through, communicate proactively and strive not to commit the same mistake twice.
- Champions engineering best practices and raises the bar for the people around you.
