This role is, first and foremost, about people and problems: building the team, raising its capability, and making sure every line of code we ship is tied to a real business outcome. You will work in close partnership with our Technical Lead (who owns architecture, design, and build-vs-buy decisions on the team) and our Product Leader (who owns product strategy, discovery, and roadmap). You'll be a true partner to both: bringing business context, organizational air cover, and a strong point of view, while letting each of them drive their own craft. Your own focus sits at the intersection of team and business: hiring and developing engineers, shaping how the team operates in an AI-first mode, hardening our deployment and compliance posture, and partnering with clinical, operational, and commercial leaders to turn the company's hardest problems into engineering work that actually moves things forward. This is a hands-on, high-impact role. What You'll Do:- Build and Grow the Team: Lead a small, AI-first product engineering team. Hire thoughtfully, onboard well, and develop the engineers you have through coaching, feedback, and career growth.- Partner with the Technical Lead: Collaborate on architecture, design, and build-vs-buy decisions; bring business context and prioritization.- Partner with the Product Leader: Bring engineering reality—capacity, feasibility, risk, and compliance—into product strategy, discovery, and roadmap.- Catalyze Engineering Solutions to Business Problems: Surface and frame high-leverage problems with clinical, operational, and commercial leaders.- Shape an AI-First Operating Model: Champion AI-augmented ways of working; integrate LLMs, RAG, and agentic patterns responsibly.- Stabilize Deployment Environments: Ensure reliability and operability of deployment; stabilize CI/CD, infrastructure, and incident response.- Own Compliance & Audit Readiness: Maintain/evolve SOC 2, HIPAA controls; drive audit readiness, evidence, access reviews, and remediation.- Set the Quality and Ownership Bar: Reinforce a "No-QA" culture; engineers test, monitor, and own deployments.- Lead with Clarity: Communicate progress, risk, and trade-offs clearly to executives and cross-functional partners. What We're Looking For:- 10+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years in engineering leadership (Director/EM/Head of Eng) managing small, high-output product teams.- Team builder who hires well and grows engineers.- Strong business collaborator and natural catalyst; fluent in cost of care, utilization, contract performance, ROI.- Partners well with strong technical and product leaders.- Deep experience in healthcare; working command of HIPAA and PHI handling.- Understanding of working with health plans, providers, and clinical data.- Led or materially contributed to SOC 2 (Type I/II), HITRUST, or comparable audits.- AI-fluent and opinionated; production experience with LLMs, RAG, or agentic patterns.- Technically credible across modern web stacks, services, data stores, and cloud.- Comfortable with ambiguity; can decompose vague goals and start shipping value quickly.- Strong communicator with diverse stakeholders.- Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent experience. Nice to Have:- Experience at Series A-C healthcare or value-based care startups (care management, chronic disease, specialty care).- Hands-on with FHIR, HL7, EHR integrations (Epic, Cerner), claims data, or interoperability standards.- Helped teams adopt AI-native patterns (RAG pipelines, agent frameworks, evaluation, guardrails) for PHI-sensitive workloads.- Track record with major audits/certifications (SOC 2 Type II, HITRUST, ISO 27001).- Startup-to-scale transition experience.- Experience with FinOps and managing cloud spend in high-growth environments.
